The initial response to a crime is how the crime is reported to the police. The police can be alerted to a crime by a 999 telephone call, either by the victim themselves, the person who committed the crime, a witness, or a passer by who may have stumbled upon a bloody weapon or body. Another way they can be reported, is someone physically going into the police station and reporting it in there.
After this and the police operator is made aware of the crime and whether there is a purpose to the phone call itself, whether it is genuine and needs a response, or a hoax. They then decide whether a crime has been committed and send out an appropriate response to the location, it may be a theft of personal property and just two officers are sent out to get a statement from the victim or an armed robbery where specialized teams would be sent out and armed officers to diffuse the situation.
This stage is very important to a police investigation as without alerting the police of a crime there wouldn't be a crime to investigate, therefore no justice would be done. The earlier it is reported then the easier it is to also preserve evidence and catch a criminal. It is also important as the police need to send out an appropriate response in order to preserve safety of public, evidence and making sure the crime scene and investigation goes underway correctly to prevent an acquittal at a later date in court. If this stage is carried out correct, then it means that the case can be investigated quicker and can lead to a possitive outcome of the case.
In my case, when Sion Jenkins found his daughter lying on the floor, he called 999 for an ambulance immediately, although Billie Jo may have been laying there for a maximum of 20 to 30 minuets. One ambulance was sent, when it did not turn up, Denise rang them back and asked for the police to come out and upon arrival and seeing the crime scene, the medical crew decided that Billie jo was the victim of a crime and pronounced her dead, a team of police were then sent out to cordon off the crime scene and stand guard, a forensic team was sent out, and two detectives turned up. This stage was very important in this particular crime as without alerting the police then Billie Jo would not of been found till a later date and this could have turned the case into a murder investigation much sooner with further inquiries prolonging the case. The evidence may also be jeprodised if left too long.
Errors in this stages could lead to aquittal, if not reported quickly, the evidence can not be preseved to an effect use in court, which could lead to an aqquital of a guilty party. The quick response to this case led to a guilty verdict in this case, which is very beneficial to the police due to obtainable evidence
