CONCLUSION OF CASE

This blog was set up with the intention to break down the contribution and roles of members of the investigation team and how criminal investigation procedures are supposed to be carried out correctly to bring about conclusions to cases in the most accurate way possible. To help with the understanding of the legal and correct way criminal case proceedings are to take place, I have been using the case of Sion Jenkins as an example to better explain how things work to come to the conclusion that they do.

In this investigation, the members of the investigation team were crucial in drawing the conclusion that they did and getting a guilty verdict in a court of law. Firstly, the investigation team cordoned off the scene, the member who did this was the FAO. This didn't help come up with a conclusion but it helped ensure security of the evidence and crime scene was kept safe so that the scenes of crime officers evidence was not tampered with and could be analysed to full effect and be counted in court as strong reliable evidence. The scenes of crime officers once called and arrived on scene in full PPE, collected two pieces of key evidence from the scene, which was the tent peg covered in blood next to Billie's body and a piece of bin liner which came from Billie's nostril. The SOCO's packaged these pieces of evidence carefully and correctly to ensure their credibility in court and to give forensics scientists optimal conditions to analyse the evidence.

Once the evidence was transported from the scene to the forensic scientists, they began to conduct their own investigations. They conducted a kastle mayer test on the blood of the tent peg and received a pink colour change which indicates that the substance was indeed blood. However kastle mayer is only a presumptive blood test, therefore it was sent to blood specialist who determined that it was 100% blood and matched the DNA to billie's. So at the point the forensic scientist will have known that the blood on the tent peg was billie's and was probably the murder weapon. But to confirm that this was murder weapon, they spoke to the pathologist who handled the body and found that the injuries sustained to the back of the head (what ultimately killed her) coincided with the weapon in question from the extent of the injuries with sharp pin point force to pierce the skull. This was the evidence which help link a piece of evidence to be the murder weapon of Billie Jo Jenkins.

When they analysed the bin liner from billie's nose, it tested positive for having her blood on it, this suggested to the team that Billie may have been attacked from behind placing a bin bag over her head, maybe to suffocate her or muffle any noise she could of made. The injuries on the back of the head also supported their theory as the killer did attack from behind. All of this evidence that the team had compiled was given to the police and the detectives handling the case which help them build a profile of the killer. One of the suspects in the case, Antoni, fitted the profile of the killer as he was known for attacking girls, especially young girls. He was violent and was also spotted in the area around the time of Billie's death and Billie had mentioned two months prior she had a stalker fitting his description. But crucially, Antoni used to suffocate his victims with bin bags and bin liner had been found at previous crime scenes of his doing.

At this point, the police's attention was pointed at Antoni, until the police uncovered the piece of evidence which ultimately solved the case, Sion Jenkin's jumper from the day of the murder covered in 146 microscope blood splatters of Billie Jo Jenkins. When the jumper was analysed and tested positive for Billie's blood, a special forensic scientist was brought in who re enacted the murder. He wore the same type of jumper and stood over a dead pig, and repeatedly stabbed the pig in head from behind. It made an almost identical blood spatter pattern like on the jumper of Sion. Connecting this piece of evidence with Sions sketchy albi for the murder, the evidence was strong enough for the police to conclude that Sion Jenkins was the murderer and to have him arrested.

I think that the conclusions that the investigation team came up with were very much justified as the evidence they collected was all strong and all the tested carried out by the forensic scientists were strong enough to seal the credit of the evidence and paint a picture of what happened to Billie to help the police with their investigation. Not only that, but the forensic scientists worked and liaised with other members of the investigation team, for example, the pathologist to be able to link different evidence together to come up with theories and help secure evidence for the CPS, and how they explained the evidence and put it together for the police and detectives to help them with their investigation to know where to look and who to look for.

As we can see, the evidence followed a clear trail which helped secure it in court and make sure the evidence was analysed quick and effectively to get an accurate and quick conclusion in the case. It was handled first by the SOCO's at the scene of crime, then transported to the lab for analyse from the forensic scientists, and to the pathologist as the body was considered too. Once the evidence had been analysed, it was then given to the police along with the results they needed to conduct a full scale investigation. Apart from the evidence of Sions jumper which was recovered by the police, transported to Forensic Scientists and then relayed back to the police. Once the police had arrested sion, the evidence was given to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) where the compiled in together and presented it in a court of law. The trail of evidence was well documented to keep it secure to stand up effectively in court. In the above paragraphs we can see how following this trail helped the police come up with this conclusion.

Because the evidence was so strong and inter-linkable with each other for example linking the tent peg to the head injuries sustained to get the murder weapon, I think that the investigation team were right to come up with the conclusions that they did. Not to mention how well the team worked which each other to present the evidence which lead the investigation in the right direction of arresting the culprit, for example the forensic scientists talking to the pathologist and to the police/detectives. I have mentioned within this page how the conclusions of the team were justified, because of the strength of the evidence and how well the team worked to get a quick arrest. Another way that the investigation team did to prove and secure evidence was bringing in a specialist to re enact the murder which helped to prove that the evidence are Sions jumper was enough to prove him guilty and solidify the detectives and police' suspicions of Sion in conjunction with his sketchy alibi and the head injuries sustained, using the same type of weapon and the splatter pattern. a persuade a jury, which may not have without the specialist. It is because of all of these things and all of the investigation team members roles which were executed very well, that the police came up with the conclusion strong enough to reach a guilty verdict in court.
