When a suspect is in the frame for the crime, looking at the intel and contacting other police forces to see if this person has been in trouble with the police before for crime, contacting the parole board or youth offending teams to see if this person is linked with crime and been convicted for it with things put in place to keep tags on them. If this is successful, we can talk to them about the suspects behavior patterns to see if there is anything the suspect does which is key to his characteristics.
The second suspect Antoni had obvious patterns in his attacks, they were against females, violent, sexual, and targeted young females. They also found out by contacting other police services that Atoni was creative with his weapon choice and also used a bin liners in one attack placing it over a females head. A piece of bin liner was found stuffed up Billies nostril.
This stage can be extremely important in investigations, for example when dealing with a serial killer, a team member who specialises in criminal profiling can be brought in to study the scene or the evidence and start to identify specific links between the crimes, like time of killing, geographical locations and a certain type of victim. By identifying these patterns and links, an investigation team can prevent further crime by potentially catching the criminal in the act or before the crime is even committed which means they can have an amazing array of evidence in court to prosecute the criminal. Gaining this information is highly beneficial in a case.
In my case, no patterns or links could be found in regards to Sion Jenkin's, but to the other suspect Atoni, many patterns and links could be made between his locations, and victims and types of crime however this was not followed up. If this was followed up, it could have changed the outcome of the case leading to the aquittal of Sion. But this will have been police error for not following this up due to them already being able to prosecute Sion.
