Stage three is the planning of the investigation, In order to have a successful investigation, good planning is crucial. Organisation, control and motivation are key factors to any successful investigation.
The purpose of this stage is to:
1. Identify the most appropriate line of enquiry
2. Determine the objective of pursing these chosen lines of enquiry
3. Identify if the investigation action(s) are needed in order to achieve the objective, are the resources appropriate, is the objective a priority? What are the necessities?
4. Gathering the max amount of material which may create a further line of enquiry, for example the evidence collected at the crime scene.
5.To understand the impact the this crime will have on the community and manage it accordingly
From here, follow up investigations may appear from the initial investigation
While the SOCO team where searching the house for evidence, Sion and the rest of the family left to stay at a friends house. Later that evening, two more detectives turned up to speak to Sion and Lois, and escort them home to collect a few personal items. After they decided to view the death of Billie as suspicious, sussex police began house to house inquiries collecting witness statements, and a police diving team was sent to the local parks pond to look for further evidence. Forensic experts analyzed the murder weapon and the crime scene.
This stage is also very important as with a proper investigation plan, the police investigators can receive the most beneficial outcome to the case by being organised and tackle an investigation head on with confidence. This stage was particularly in my case due to the severity of the crime, it was detrimental that this case was solved quickly, for justice and for the public's safety and fears. The investigation plan in my case, plagued with much controversy, was a good investigation plan as it lead to more follow up leads, finding suspects and further evidence which lead to the arrest of Sion Jenkin's. If this investigation plan was not followed out correctly, it could have caused Sion Jenkin's to walk free on the first trial due to police disregard of the investigation, or that crucial piece of evidence may not have been found. Because of this, it lead to a successful outcome of my case.
